Martinez Defeats Barker

Sergio Martinez suffered a broken nose early in the fight but continued to control the fight with the right hand. As the fight progressed Martinez’s right hand landed more an more and Barkers left eye was showing signs of swelling. In the eleventh round with Martinez in control, Martinez landed a right hand that appeared to glance off of Barkers glove and Barker went down and would not get back up giving Martinez an eleventh round knockout.

Rooney Jr Suffers Setback

What’s worse than training for six weeks for your next fight against an orthodoxed fighter and then on fight night you step in the ring and he is a southpaw. That’s what happened when Kevin Rooney Jr stepped in the ring on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City against Daniel Lugo. For two rounds Roony tried to figure out Lugo but not much worked and he had a very hard time landing punches. By the third round Rooney looked to be on the right track by landing some body shots and backing Lugo up. The fourth round was all Rooney but by the judges score cards, it was too little too late. The three judges scored the fight 39-37 for Lugo and Rooney suffered his first loss.

Martinez – Barker Weigh-ins

All the fighters for DiBella Entertainments “Noche De ‘Maravilla’” card weighed-in earlier today before a standing room only crowd as nearly 1000 fans turned out to witness the weigh-in. In the main event, shown live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing, WBC Diamond Belt Middleweight Champion, and top three pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez will look to defend his crown against England’s undefeated European Champion, “Dazzling” Darren Barker. Both fighters looked to be in tremendous shape with the Champion, Martinez tipping the scales at 158 lbs. while the challenger Barker weighed-in at 159.5 lbs. In the HBO televised co-feature, top-rated middleweight contender, Andy Lee looks to avenge the only loss of his professional career when he takes on Bryan Vera. Both Lee and Vera weighed in at 163 lbs. Below is the complete bout sheet for tomorrow night’s show.
